2019 GRAMMY Awards: The Snubs and Surprises
The Grammy’s are one of the biggest night’s for the music industry but they’re not necessarily an accurate representation of the music industry as a whole. If Drake somehow wins zero awards, that does not make Drake less popular. That Ariana Grande was not nominated for more awards does not negate her impressive musical achievements this year. The Grammys are their own world, and they matter exactly as much as we let them matter. Whatever your reason for watching is, we’ll see you in February, Grammy’s!
This year’s Grammy nominees were announced on Friday. Hip-hop dominated but so did soundtracks.
Kendrick Lamar has the most nominations with eight, thanks to his work curating the “Black Panther” soundtrack. Drake is next with seven . . . followed by Brandi Carlile with six. A producer named Boi-1da also scored six.
Lady Gaga was nominated five times, and four came from “A Star Is Born”.
“Black Panther” became just the THIRD soundtrack to be nominated for Album of the Year in the past 25 years. The other two are “Waiting to Exhale” in 1995 and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” in 2000.
The Grammys expanded the number of nominees in the four biggest categories from five to EIGHT. Those categories are: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.
Mac Miller’s “Swimming” is up for Best Rap Album. It’s his first nomination, and sadly he isn’t alive to see it. He died of a drug overdose in September.
And Eminem’s track “Lucky You” was nominated for Best Rap Song even though the song TAKES A SHOT at the Grammys. Eminem raps, quote, “I done won a couple Grammys, but I sold my soul to get ’em. Wasn’t in it for the trophies, just the [effin’] recognition. [Eff’s] the difference?”
And in another track off the same album called “Fall”, Eminem goes even further quote, “Then tell the Grammys to go and [eff] themselves. They suck the blood from all the biggest artists like some leeches . . .
“They nominate ’em, get ’em there, get a name to MC the show. Every parasite needs a host. Then give ‘Album of the Year’ to somebody that no one’s ever even heard of.” (Is it safe to say Eminem won’t be there?)
Taylor Swift was probably the biggest snub. Her album “Reputation” was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album, but that’s the only one she got. Part of the reason might be that her album came out last year, but just missed the cut-off for the 2018 ceremony. This year’s window is October 1st of last year up through September 30th.
The other snubs include: Carrie Underwood, Nicki Minaj, Troye Sivan, Lil Wayne, Panic! At the Disco, Sam Smith, Migos, and Zayn Malik.
CBS will air “The 61st Annual Grammy Awards” live on February 10th.
