Penny Marshall passed away on Monday, reportedly from complications of diabetes.  She was 75.  She was previously diagnosed with brain and lung cancer in 2009. Penny was most famous for starring as Laverne DeFazio on “Laverne & Shirley”, which was a spin-off of “Happy Days”.

But she was also a successful director in the ’80s and ’90s.  She did the Whoopi Goldberg movie “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”, the Tom Hanks movie “Big”, the Robin Williams movie “Awakenings”“A League of Their Own” .

Naturally, it wasn’t long after Mashall’s death was announced that the tributes began pouring in.  Here are the highlights:Ron Howard, who was on “Happy Days” with Penny, said, quote, “She was funny and so smart.  She made the transition from sitcom star to A-List movie director with ease and had a major impact on both mediums.  All that, and always relaxed, funny, and totally unpretentious.  I was lucky to have known and worked with her.”

Henry Winkler said, quote, “She was so inventive, so funny, and so warm.  She brought her own unique brand of humor to what was on the written page.  Watching her playing Laverne, I remember thinking, ‘Wow,’ she has just created the 20th Century Lucille Ball.'”

Tom Hanks, who starred in “Big” and “A League of Her Own”, said, quote, “Goodbye, Penny.  Man, did we laugh a lot!  Wish we still could.  Love you.”

Geena Davis said, quote, “Penny brought so much joy to so many, and will be sorely missed.  I will be forever grateful to her for letting me be a part of ‘A League of Their Own’.”

Rosie O’Donnell posted a video of a 1996 K-Mart commercial she and Penny appeared in, with the message, quote, “Simply heartbroken.”  She also posted a photo of them wearing Santa hats.

By the way, did you know that Penny was the first ever guest star on “The Simpsons”?  Yesterday, “Simpsons” showrunner Al Jean Tweeted, quote, “Penny [was] our first guest star and a great talent.  You will be missed!”

Penny was a bigtime sports fan, and that led to her bonding with Bow Wow.  He Tweeted, quote, “Had the chance to meet and sit at plenty of Laker games with Ms. Penny Marshall during my childhood years.  Great woman with a great soul!”
