Celebrity Status – Oscars Winners, SNL And Idol
For Monday, March 3rd:
“Anora,” a strip club Cinderella story without the fairy tale ending, was crowned best picture at the 97th Academy Awards. It was also the Palme d’Or-winner at the Cannes Film Festival last year, and was made for just $6 million. Sean Baker won for Best Director and Mikey Madison won best actress for her performance in “Anora,” and Adrien Brody won best actor for the “Brutalist.” The supporting actor Oscars went to Zoe Saldana and Kieran Culkin.
Conan O’Brien had a solid opening monologue, and “Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo kicked off the ceremony with a tribute to Los Angeles following the wildfires earlier this year. They and more of the cast performed a few songs, and the musical won awards for production design and costume design. Other technical Oscars went to “The Substance,” “The Brutalist” and “Dune: Part 2.”
Saturday Night Live returned this weekend with Shane Gillis as host and Calgary’s Tate McRae as the musical guest, and a surprise appearance by Mike Myers as Elon Musk. At the end of the show he wore a t-shirt that read ‘Canada is Not For Sale’.
At the box office, ’Captain America: Brave New World’ stayed at the top of the heap with just $15 million on a weak Oscars weekend . “Last Breath” was second with $7. million and “The Monkey” was third.
Auditions have begun for season 23 of American Idol, and Carrie Underwood is making her grand return to the show that launched her career — this time as its newest judge.
